*Someone peeks out of tent only to-OHMYGOD, a friend jumps in front of the camera* *Someone starts to review some camera footage when-OHMYGOD a friend randomly slaps the footage away*. Why even have that segment in there if that's all you're going to do with it? They could have utilized that moment before they all split up to really make everyone freak out even more and grow increasingly desperate to get home.Ģ) All the false jump scares were so lame.

That being said, there were some problems with it, too.ġ) The girl injuring herself on the rock and the subsequent foot twitch made me think that it would amount to much moor than just some random insect she pulls out a bit later on. I thought the final bit in the house was also really tension-inducing with its narrow corridors and not quite sure knowing what's real and what's fake. Regarding Blair Witch, I thought it was cast well and I liked how there was that initial false freak-out where they find the wood sculptures only to realize that they weren't genuine. Maybe I need to watch it again, but I just thought it was a bit crap the first time I saw it. I always forget that As Above, So Below is considered a good horror film by a fair number of people. The creators clearly did their mythos homework, and it showed. So TLDR: great sequel, delivered in every way. That closing track was perfect, a lot like TBWP1's 'The Cellar'. The whole third act was insane, really nailed that feeling of 'they are fucked.' Was that and the elongated limb version the only footage of her? The latter was terrifying. I never thought that person in the beginning was Elly. First she lured him by pretending to be Heather, then the girl by pretending to be him. I gathered that his plan was that if they looked in the corner, they could survive, but she was too smart for that. The rocks and other homages were brilliant, especially when Elly went HAM as said. I suspect she wasn't judging by how freaked out she is, but whether or not five days really went by is questionable.Ĭould have done without the injured foot body horror, but oh well. Not sure if his girlfriend was in on it or not.

I suspect that he once got trapped in the forest and Elly only let him survive to lure more people in."YOU HAVE TO DO WHAT SHE SAYS!" I love that Lane was trying to be a new Rustin Parr. Regardless, considering some have still enjoyed it for what it is, I'll check it out with measured expectations.!!įirstly, the twists were brilliant. I also hope it doesn't screw with the lore too goofily, buut hey, it will do what it wants to do and until I watch it I can't say much. (For better or for worse.) To see a sequel you automatically hope they do the original justice, but it's not easy to pave a path styled after more contemporary jump-scare tropes and bombast while also tackling the same setting at a different, less minimalist angle. The found-footage camerawork and nuanced character development were sui generis at the time and laid the groundwork for likeminded opportunists later. The Blair Witch Project introduced such a mystifying lore around the witch in the woods that led you on with little to no real exposition that everything felt very tangible, yet evilly cryptic.

Now after looking at some opinions here, though, I feel like this is one of those films that would work great alone as opposed to a series installment. Not all consensuses are to be trusted, no, but I am picky about my horror movies, and I've been craving a very good, suffocating, supernatural one in particular recently. At first I was reticent about seeing this, then heard a lot of great impressions and got won over, and today was about to see it until I hit up RT and checked the plummet in the review score, lol.
